This is really inspiring! I love how you saw it as a catalyst for change. I'm a medical student aspiring to be a psychiatrist and I love nature and holistic medical approaches. Your substack is very inspiring :) Feel free to check out my posts, here's one: https://substack.com/@beriahos/note/p-162171141
Thanks for your feedback. Congrats on joining Substack and sharing your journey. It takes courage to step out of your comfort zone to leave home and study in another country. I shared this post because I wouldn't have found my happy place in being able to help others if I hadn't gone through my cancer journey. It led me to where I am now and helped me find my true life purpose. Sometimes we have to zig-zag to get to where we need to be. I hope you enjoy your journey. I wonder if you could explore horticultural therapy as an extension to your study? There are many programs now helping people with mental health issues, in particular with garden therapy. Just sowing a thought!
It might be a side offering or specialty - worst case you get the physical and mental health benefits yourself! Many aged care facilities engage their residents in these types of programs with great outcomes. Food for thought!
So true! I’m currently doing a clerkship at a mental health hospital and it’s beautifully green, filled with trees and wild plants. I live in a metropolitan city so it’s definitely a necessity for mental health!
I hear you about mental health in cities. Green spaces are vital. If it turns out to be an area of interest, you could consider reading the research studies the have compared the health outcomes for hospital patients who had access to nature vs not. Even just looking out their window at the trees vs those that didn't. Fascinating results. Less medication, interventions and faster recovery. Just sowing a seed in case you want to dive down that interesting rabbit hole. 🐇
